“I want to be upright
And yet seemingly there
Are many things that drag
me either to one side or the other”
“I don’t know..” sighed Francis.
“I always seem to end up down
If you know what I mean.”
So she looked down to the ground
so as not to be distracted.
And people flew past her to either
side like leaves or falling scaffolding.
For sometimes, it is true, they found
Themselves hurtling towards the same
Paving stone of which Francis was
now so particularly transfixed.
“Yet”, reasoned Francis, “at least this
Time I have the upper hand.”
Then one day, as Francis was still
Going about her business examining paving-
Stones, she saw the sky reflected in
a puddle. Quickly she looked up
feeling that perhaps at any moment
she would lose her hard earnt
position in the world. She looked
up and the laughter rang out all
around her.
